74. 1907 – Removing a Slave’s Leg Irons

After 245 years, and 3.4 million Africans transported to North America, Britain finally outlawed the transatlantic slave trade. In 1907, a British sailor from the HMS Sphinx was photographed removing the leg irons used to restrain this former slave.

73. 1941 – PreSchool Children in WWII Liverpool

In 1941, bombing campaigns began in the city of London. The whole country feared a gas attack from the German forces, and every citizen in the UK was issued a gas mask. While they look pretty frightening, there were consistent gas attack drills for children in schools. The kids realized that they could actually make fart noises by blowing through the mask, so this probably made it a little bit more enjoyable! Thankfully, a gas attack on Britain never happened.
