66. 1960: Ruby Bridges
Ruby Bridges was the first black child to attend an all-white school on the disintegration of Jim Crow. She was escorted to the William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. On arrival, she thought the masses of protestors were there for Mardi Gras, not to complain about her presence. Bridges was one of 6 children who passed the tests to attend a white school and was the only one to attend William Frantz. She received counseling throughout her first year at school to help her through the abuse she suffered.
65. 1961: Louis Armstrong in Egypt
Throughout the Cold War, the US Government was terrified at the prospect of third world countries falling to Communism. In an attempt to avoid this, they sent ‘cultural ambassadors’ to show them the freedoms of America and Capitalism. In 1961, Louis Armstrong was sent to Egypt as an ambassador. He is pictured here at the Pyramids, playing the trumpet for his wife.
