59. 1901: The Discovery of Blanche Monnier

The French authorities were alerted to the forced imprisonment of a girl in a home on the wealthy Rue de la Visitation, in Paris. In 1901, after 25 years without even seeing sunlight, Blanche Monnier was discovered, she had been padlocked into a room with pests, human excrement, and filth. She had, apparently, wanted to marry a lawyer when she was 25 years old. Her mother did not approve, and to stop the wedding from going ahead locked her daughter away. She continued to have mental health problems until her death in 1913. Her mother never answered for her crimes as she died days after Blanche was found.
