54. 1988: Pan Am Flight 103

The Lockerbie Bombing happened on December 21, 1988. The Pan Am Flight 103 was on its way from Heathrow to JFK when it exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 243 people on board. On hitting the ground, the crash killed another 11 people. The Scottish police and the FBI, after 3 years of investigating, arrested 2 Libyan nationals and handed them over to Muammar Gaddafi. He claimed no part of the terrorist attack¬†and paid compensation to the victims’ families in the wake of the arrests.

53. 2015: The Syrian Crisis

On August 22, 2015, at least 20 civilians were killed in Douma, Syria, by their own government. A little girl is treated in a makeshift hospital for the wounds she has sustained in the air raid. This was just 6 days after an airstrike had killed 100 people and brought the Syrian Crisis to the mainstream news. The Syrian conflict has been happening since 2011, and in February 2016, the recorded number of deaths was close to 470,000. 1.9 million people had been wounded – that equates to 11.5% of the entire population of Syria either dead, or wounded.
