46. Building the Empire State

A worker is seen taking a break and surveying the skyline of New York City while doing his part to help build the Empire State, the tallest building in the world for close to 40 years. The majority of those who worked on the building were foreign nationals.

45. 1899: Pearl Hart

The Candian-born Pearl Hart was left by an abusive husband to fight in the Spanish-American war. She fell into bad company and became a stage coach robber, notorious mostly because of her gender. On planning a robbery with Joe Boot, she was caught and sentenced to 5 years in a male prison, Yuma Territorial Prison. Boot became a wagon driver who delivered supplies to chain gangs outside of the prison walls. He escaped and was never seen again. She was pardoned after 2 on the governor discovering that she was pregnant.
