20. 1945 – The First Atomic Bomb

‘The Gadget’, or the first ever atomic bomb, was created in 1945. On July 16th, 1945, the bomb was detonated at Trinity Site, New Mexico as part of the Manhattan Project. The code name Trinity was taken from a line of John Donne’s. The bomb that destroyed Nagasaki in August, just over a month later, was the same design as ‘The Gadget’. The Nagasaki bomb was nicknamed ‘The Fat Man’.

19. 1960 – An Assassination on Live TV

In October 1960, 17-year-old Otoya Yamaguchi attacked and killed Inejiro Asanuma with a sword, during a debate on live TV. The Japanese politician was an advocate of the Chinese Communist Party and was very controversial in post-war Japan. The killing of Asanuma caused the disintegration of the Japan Socialist Party and led to huge demonstrations across the country. In 1996, the Socialist Party was resurrected as the Social Democratic Party.
