86. 1931. Al Capone’s Soup Kitchen

In 1931, America was in the depths of the Great Depression and Al Capone was between prison sentences. Capone’s was one of the first soup kitchens in existence in the US, and while he was presumably being so charitable in an effort to clean up his image, he was, according to one of the men in the kitchen, doing more for the poor than the US Government. Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years in a federal prison in 1932 and died in 1946 due to complications with syphilis.

An experimental aircraft developed by NASA for the US Ari Force was a Lenticular Reentry Vehicle. The saucer-shaped plane was planned to be used for nuclear warhead delivery during the Cold War.
