In 1963, the last prisoners left Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay. It began as a prison for Civil War POWs in 1861 and in 1868, it became a long term prison for military prisoners. In 1933, Alcatraz became a federal prison and in August of 1934, the first 137 federal prisoners arrived. President JFK ordered the prison closed on March 21, 1963, and the approximately 250 inmates and 60 Bureau of Prisons families on the island left for the last time. In 1976, Alcatraz was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
