6. 1941: The Last Jew in Vinnitsa

In 1941, all 28,000 Jews in Vinnitsa, Ukraine were massacred by German Troops. This picture came from the personal album of an Einsatzgruppen soldier. Written on the back is ‘ Last Jew of Vinnitsa’. The man was shot while kneeling beside a mass grave of his family, friends, and neighbors.

5. 1933: The Night Prohibition Ended

For 13 long years, the US endured Prohibition. From 1920 until December 1933, the sale, the consumption of, the production of, and the transportation of alcohol was illegal. In 1933, the US Government finally realized that it had been a failure and ratified the 21st Amendment. That night (pictured here) was a huge celebration!
