2. 1945: German POWs Seeing What they were Fighting For
In 1945 WWII ended in the Allies favor. German POWs were forced to clean up the devastation they had left behind in concentration camps across Europe and in Russia. These POWs were forced to watch footage of these concentration camps, and what they had done to people, all because of their religion. You can see the look of disgust and mortification on some of their faces. Even if they were not stationed in a concentration camp, they were made to see what it was they had been fighting for.
1. 1912: Testing a Football Helmet
Despite not being mandatory for college players until 1939 and NFL players until 1943, football helmets had been around since 1896. Before the invention of helmets, football players pretty much expected to suffer head injuries. They grew their hair long as a form of protection. This photo was taken in 1912, and sees a boy testing out a new helmet to see if it will protect him from concussion! We hope it worked!
